Following the tradition of his clan, at the age of adulthood Usul’s parents presented him to Adishia, the clan’s witch. Upon seeing Usul Adishia turned pale (okay paler than what a Shadar-kai already looks). She fell deep into a trance like state.
The clan immediately began to rejoice. They had been in desperate need of a good omen. Adishia began, “This child presented unto me is to bring great change.” Again cheers went up.
Adishia continued, “He shall rise to a great power in the realm. Through him shall many to be brought to the Raven Queen. He shall destroy …“
An unearthly silence fell upon the gathered members of the clan. They could not believe the fortune of the family. A great warrior rising to power. One who will serve the Raven Queen with distinction.
Adishia continued “… the clan!”
Awe-struck Usul’s parents, along with the rest of the clan, gasped. They were anticipating great news, positive news, anything but this.
Usul did not know what to say or do. No one had ever witnessed anything of this nature before.
He immediately tried to ask questions, but was quickly silenced. The chieftain rose. A hush fell over the clan. He spoke, “Usul Feyd, you must discover the meaning behind this.” Usul was dumbfonded. What could all this mean?
Adishia regained her normal appearance. She spoke but one thing more to Usul, “Valley of Light.” She then turned from him and left.
With her last words, Adishia caused to the clan to turn on Usul. All its members turned against him. His parents allowed him to leave, if he did it quickly and quietly. Usul wandered for some time, not knowing the meaning of those cryptic last words. He began to become desperate. He sought the power promised him by Adishia.
In his travels he grew closer to the Raven Queen, though she returned the favor little. He found his natural abilities with the chain, a traditional but deadly weapon for the shadar-kai, were able to be put to use for Her ends. Others noticed him too.
Usul’s presence was “requested” one day. He was taken to a long forgotten, hidden keep. Here Usul’s skills were perfected. The training was rigorous, the conditions bleak. Usul, true to his heritage, met it with a loving embrace. He tempted his teachers with his manner. Usul wore the most outlandish colors he could find. He frequently changed his appearance to be more colorful than the last. The monks tried to remove his joyous attitude. Usul relished the time even more.
His training now complete Usul was given an assignment. He was to stop the shadar-kai from joining Skull Lord Bane and Krang.
Usul could not believe what he was being told. The shadar-kai would never willingly help the undead. They would die before going against the Raven Queen. Usul was assured the stories were true. He was sent to the Valley of Light.
